چکیده

We present empirical formulae for the electron density vs. line profile widths and shifts developed from precise measurements of hydrogen Balmer series alpha and beta emissions for diagnostics of laser-induced plasma. The formulae are for the Stark width and Stark red shift of the Hα line, as well as for the Stark width and peak separation of the Hβ line and are tested using measurements of Hα and Hβ emissions in laser-induced plasma following ablation of an aluminum surface in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. The Hα and Hβ line widths and Hα line shift are determined by fitting the measured spectra with Voigt profiles. The Hβ peak separation is found by direct inspection. For example, the Hβ line shows Ne of 3.2±0.3×10 17 cm-3 and 3.8±0.5×1017 cm-3 from the line width and peak separation, respectively, at a time delay of 0.65 μs from plasma generation. Gas metallicity diagnostics in star-forming galaxies

Generally the gas metallicity in distant galaxies can only be inferred by using a few prominent emission lines. Various theoretical models have been used to predict the relationship between emission line fluxes and metallicity, suggesting that some line ratios can be used as diagnostics of the gas metallicity in galaxies. However, accurate empirical calibrations of these emission line flux rati...

The chromosphere of II Pegasi: multi-line modelling of an RS Canum Venaticorum star

We present the first simultaneous multi-line fitting of a semi-empirical atmospheric model with a chromosphere and transition region to the H I and Ca II spectra of an RS CVn star (II Peg). The static component of the Hα emission core, the line profile of Hβ, the apparent absence of Hγ and Hδ, and the emission core profiles of Ca II K and two of the Ca II IR3 lines are all approximately fitted ...

Atomic Hydrogen and Molecular Carbon Emissions in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

This article addresses hydrogen Balmer series measurements following laser-induced optical breakdown. Electron density on the order of 1 × 10 m−3 can be inferred using Hα Stark width and shift for plasma generated in 1 to 1.3 × 10 Pa, gaseous hydrogen. The Hβ line can be utilized for electron density up to 7 × 10 m−3. Laser ablation of aluminium reveals limits of application of the Balmer serie...

Diagnostics of non-thermal processes in chromospheric flares IV. Limb flare spectra for an atmosphere bombarded by an electron beam

Hα, Lyα, Lyβ, CaII K and λ8542 Å line profiles have been computed for limb flares with height distributions of temperatures as given by the semi-empirical models F1 and F2, by including the non-thermal collisional excitation and ionization of hydrogen and of ionized calcium that results from electron bombardment. In agreement with observations, the computed profiles of the hydrogen lines are ve...

Magnetospheric accretion and winds on the T Tauri star SU Aurigae Multi-spectral line variability and cross-correlation analysis

SU Aurigae is a T Tauri star that was well monitored during the MUSICOS 96 multi-site campaign. We present the results of the spectroscopic analysis of the circumstellar environment of this star, particularly of the Hα, Hβ, Na i D and He i D3 line profiles. The signatures of modulated outflows and mass accretion events are analysed, as well as transient spectral features. We compute the cross-c...
